**Early Years**

Born on May 27, 1939, in Floydada, Texas, Don Williams was the youngest of three sons to Loveta Mae and James Andrew Williams. He grew up in Portland, Texas, and graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 1958. After his parents' divorce, his mother remarried twice, which added complexity to his early life.

A significant tragedy struck in 1963 when Williams' eldest brother, Kenneth, died from electrocution at the age of 29.

**Military Service and Early Career**

Before diving into the music scene, Williams served two years with the United States Army Security Agency. Following his honorable discharge, he worked various jobs to support himself and his family. His music career began to take shape with the formation of the folk-pop group Pozo-Seco Singers, alongside Susan Taylor and Lofton Cline. The group signed with Columbia Records and recorded several albums until disbanding in 1970.

**Solo Career and Rise to Fame**

Williams' solo career took off in the early 1970s. He signed on as a songwriter for Jack Music Inc. in December 1971 and released his first solo album with JMI Records in 1972. His 1974 hit "We Should Be Together" marked the beginning of a series of successes, leading to a contract with ABC/Dot Records. His first single with ABC/Dot, "I Wouldn't Want to Live If You Didn't Love Me," hit number one and was followed by a string of top ten hits through the late 1970s and 1980s.

One of his most iconic songs, "I Believe in You," topped the country charts and found international success, especially in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

**Acting and Later Career**

Williams also ventured into acting, appearing in Burt Reynolds' movies like "W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings" and "Smokey and the Bandit II," where he performed several songs.

After announcing his "Farewell Tour of the World" in 2006, Williams retired from touring. However, he made a comeback in 2010 and released a new album, "And So It Goes," in 2012, featuring collaborations with artists like Alison Krauss and Keith Urban. His final UK tour took place in 2014.

**Retirement and Legacy**

In March 2016, Williams announced his retirement from touring, expressing gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support. He emphasized the need for quiet time with his family.

**Personal Life and Passing**

Williams married Joy Janene Bucher in April 1960, and the couple had two children. On September 8, 2017, Don Williams passed away in Mobile, Alabama, from emphysema, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire musicians and fans worldwide.
